Using a Butane Stove Safely

Even though a butane stove can be very convenient, it is very important to make sure that you know how to operate it safely. As may be expected, some recommendations are common sense, while others will require spending some time getting accustomed to the equipment and how it works.

For the most part, if you take the time to observe safety guidelines, you should be able to enjoy using your butane stove for years to come.

Irregardless of whether you are using a butane stove while camping, or for emergency purposes, it is very important to choose a safe operating location. Among other things, you will not want to rest the stove on, or near anything that is flammable. If you are planning to use the stove indoors, it is also crucial to make sure that the rooms have enough ventilation.

You will also need to make sure that you store fuel cylinders and the stove carefully. As an example, if the stove is lit, any unused cylinders should be kept well away from heat and flames. It is also very important to keep all cylinders with you, even if they are empty. This will help reduce litter, as well as reduce the chances of a fire starting if sunlight heats up the cylinder and ignites nearby flammable materials.

Today, most stoves come with an emergency shut-off switch. Without a question, if the unit shuts down on its own, is best to take it to a certified repair person. The last thing you will want to do is try to fix the stove on your own. Irregardless of the situation, it is in your best interest to refrain from circumventing the safety features built into these stoves.

It is also very important to use the right size tank, and the proper fuel in the stove. Among other things, you may find that the stove will only accommodate a certain size butane cylinder. Typically, a larger cylinder will also have a higher compression ratio. As a result, the regulator valves on your stove may not be strong enough to prevent excess gas from reaching the flame. While it may be annoying to carry a number of smaller cylinders, at least you will have peace of mind knowing that you will reduce the chances of your stove blowing up.

When you are dealing with an emergency situation, it is natural to feel tired and impatient. Unfortunately, both mindsets can lead you to become careless in a number of ways. This includes not setting up the stove properly, as well as failing to keep track of used fuel cylinders. That said, if you observe the safety guidelines that come with your butane stove, you should be able to operate it safely, and with a minimal amount of difficulty.
