Using a Camp Stove for Emergency Purposes

As global warming continues to cause sudden and massive weather formations, energy providers are having an increasingly difficult time ensuring that everyone has electricity. Without a question, anyone that has gone through Hurricane Katrina, a large earthquake, or a tsunami can tell you that it can take days, and even months to regain electricity.

Even if you do not go camping, it will be to your advantage to keep a camp stove on hand. Irregardless of whether you choose a model that uses sterno cans, propane cylinders, or butane, at least you will be able to cook food and keep warm. At the very least, if you already have a supply of candles and flashlights on hand, a camp stove will be every bit as useful.

If you live in an area where the temperatures get cold during the winter, you may also want to purchase a heater. In some cases, you can find one unit that will serve as a stove as well as a heater. That said, if you are looking for a stove that is economical on fuel, you may find it better to purchase one dedicated stove, and one heater.

Depending on where you live, you should give some thought to the amount of time that you may find yourself without electricity. As an example, if you live in an area where there are many hurricanes, it may help to have enough fuel to last several days. Even if you do not purchase your supply all at once, you can buy a bottle at a time and set it aside.

Before you are faced with an emergency situation, it will be to your advantage to make sure that you know how to use the camp stove safely. This will include determining where you will operate the stove, as well as practicing to make sure that you are familiar with the equipment. As you study the instructions, you may also want to set up a checklist or maintenance schedule in order to make sure that the stove remains in good working order.

Unfortunately, losing electricity can cause all kinds of problems. At the same time, a generator is beyond the budget of many homeowners. That said, if you purchase a camp stove, at least you will have a source of heat. If you plan carefully, this and other inexpensive equipment can help you manage an emergency with a minimal amount of stress.
